Sentencing is a complex process. It balances competing community interests, including the need to punish offenders, promote rehabilitiation, prevent further offending and protect the community.
In this section, we provide an overview of the sentencing process. The information is largely based on the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999.
We acknowledge Aboriginal people as the First Nations Peoples of NSW and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future. We acknowledge the ongoing connection Aboriginal people have to this land and recognise Aboriginal people as the original custodians of this land.
